On a summer evening in August, 1989. a group of appriximately 15 Shelby residents came together to begin an effort to document, save, and promote the history of the Shelby Iron Works. The Historic Shelby Association (HSA) was born on that night. HSA was subsequently granted non-profit status as a 501 (C) (3) organization.
Historic Shelby Association owns and operates Shelby Iron Works Park.
Shortly after getting organized, we purchased one-half acre a property that was the former location of the L&N Depot. Work was begun immediately on clearing that parcel of land. Our first "Fall Festival", as it was called then, was held on this property and the grounds of the Shelby (New Dannemora) Hotel. Within a couple of years, Gulf States Paper Corporation had donated an additional seven acres to HSA. That property was soon cleared. The site became Shelby Iron Works Park.
We are an all volunteer, membership organization with no paid staff. Our dues are $12.00 per person, per year. All memberships are renewable in October of each year. We'd be pleased to have you as a member.
